WMP was engaged to renovate the Archabbey’s most revered structure, the Archabbey Church. Built between 1899 and 1904, the Church was constructed of sandstone quarried locally by the monks themselves. The client wished to update the structure’s building systems, improve overall accessibility for the community’s large population of elderly and infirm, and alter the interior design created during earlier renovations.
The sanctuary floor originally was comprised of two levels with the east apse six feet higher than the west. The existing floor was demolished and sections were lowered to create a single level. A new marble tile floor was fabricated in Italy. The transept balconies were razed to allow more natural light from the large rose windows and to strengthen the transept spatially. The organ was replaced and relocated from the north transept balcony to the apse on the sanctuary floor. New choir stalls were installed in the transept. The tower clock and bell mechanisms were refurbished and a replacement bell was cast in Belgium.
The heating and cooling system will utilize a radiant floor in conjunction with a high-volume, low-speed forced air system. This configuration is common in European church renovations but is the first installation of its kind in North America.
