This project involved the historic renovation and expansion of Miami University’s Hall Auditorium—the primary performance space for the Miami University School of Music, as well as the campus theater most frequently hosting guest artists. The building includes a 757-seat concert hall and faculty offices.

The historic structure, designed in 1907, was ill suited for contemporary performances. Therefore, the stage house was significantly expanded and fitted with an acoustical shell, new rigging, and stage lift. An addition to the back of the auditorium, discreetly tucked behind the existing building, allowed the new stage to be installed. It is now large enough for contemporary performance groups. The floor and balcony were completely reconfigured and rebuilt for improved audience sight lines and comfort.

Hall’s exterior was also restored. The windows were replaced with new acoustically rated windows with automatic daylight control—helping to soundproof the hall while allowing for the choice of daylight or stage light.

John R. Heard, Department of Music Chair, said of the completed project: “The beautiful transformation of this venerable facility has provided greater comfort, increased ability to function, and improved general ambience: at the same time, renovation has succeeded in retaining the special character of old Hall Auditorium.” Hall Auditorium was featured in the American School and University’s Architectural Profile of Outstanding School and University Buildings.
