This limestone and concrete performing arts center is a multipurpose hall that was designed to be the home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Particular emphasis was placed on instrumental acoustics.
The 24,000 square foot grand foyer crosses the entire front of the building. The stage house is nine stories. The stage can be extended or contracted to accommodate both single performers and grand opera. It is 51 feet wide at the proscenium opening, 62 feet deep, and 81 feet high. The orchestra shell is an integral part of the stage and can be electrically lowered. The backstage has accommodated four full opera companies at one time.
Seating is continental style to maximize the number of center seats and legroom and to avoid interrupting aisles. The distance of the seats from the stage has been minimized; from stage to back row is only 113 feet. Three balcony levels form a horseshoe and create a visual asset in both the auditorium and the lobby. To meet fire codes, exits were placed 15 feet apart; they were functionally translated to the exterior in a series of staggered wall elements.
In addition to the Indianapolis Symphony, the hall has been used for a wide variety of musical and theatrical productions and one-person shows.
