Originally designed in 1927 as the Indiana Theatre, its facade is of complex glazed cream terra cotta ornamentation and its interiors contains exotic Indian and Egyptian motifs. It was Indianapolis’ most lavish “movie palace” and is listed on the National Historic Register of Historic Places.
To preserve this historic landmark, the once 3,000-seat theater complex was converted into three theaters as the new home of the Indiana Repertory Theatre—a new main stage, an upper stage, and an auditorium. A cabaret, a ballroom for conventions and other special events, and restaurants enhanced the completed project. A lower level connector to a retail mall was also designed.
The Main Stage Theatre has a variable-thrust proscenium stage. The Upper Stage Theatre serves a variety of performances. The top level contains the Cabaret Club Theatre, IRT’s promotion offices.
Once doomed for demolition, the Indiana Theatre complex has been retained and restored—supporting the renaissance of downtown Indianapolis.
