This 99,000-square-foot facility on the University of Alabama campus was designed to support the University's Department of Music. The new center features numerous performance and rehearsal spaces such as: • a 1,000-seat concert hall; • a 150-seat lecture/recital hall; • rehearsal rooms for instrumental music; and a • choral/opera rehearsal hall.
The concert hall is elegantly modeled after several of the most famous concert halls in the world, particularly the Musikverein building in Vienna, home of the Vienna Philharmonic. In addition to performance spaces, this instructional facility includes numerous classrooms, lecture rooms, studio offices for more than 30 faculty members, and 50 practice rooms.
The existing buildings of the campus, predominantly Neoclassical in style, suggested the themes for the new center. The contextual design of this facility was enhanced through the use of familiar campus materials such as red brick, stone, and stucco. The major wing contains the taller spaces for performances, while academic functions form a lower wing.
The location of the facility forms two wings of a quadrangle. This arrangement gives all of the buildings on the site a beautiful shared park-like interior quad. A defining campus circulation path cuts through the first floor of the academic wing and leads to this courtyard. Large oak trees grace the level site.
