The new library—designed by Woollen, Molzan and Partners—serves the College, Theology School, and Monastery as a research/study facility and depository for archives and records. It was designed to house 200,000 volumes.
Because of the unusual terrain, no level site remained for the library. WMP's library designers found the most logical approach, in relation to the formidable complex of 19th century buildings, was to step the library down the hill on axis with the main entry to the schools. The tri-level building, with entry at the top floor, is terraced on the slope as a garden would be—an analogy furthered by the grass covered, bermed roof and the use of ground covers on the decks of the lower levels.
Located on the entry level are the areas receiving the greatest amount of circulation: the periodical and reference rooms, the main desk and card catalogue, and all of the offices of the librarians and technical staff. The lower two levels are largely devoted to stacks, with the archives being on the lowest level. From the two promenade decks on the terraces, library patrons can enjoy fine views of the surrounding countryside.
